Summary: As Harry Potter starts his 6th year at Hogwarts, he comes face to face with his newest DADA professor, Severus Snape. Sometimes a look can speak volumes, but what is it saying? Set during HBP.
Disclaimer: The brilliant characters belong solely to J.K. Rowling. The plot and typos are my own. No profit is being made.
Prompt: His black eyes roved over their upturned faces, lingering for a fraction of a second longer on Harry's than anyone else's. (HBP, US edition, page 177)
A/N: A drabble challenge of my own making. I found the prompt sentence a very curious thing indeed – quite open to interpretation and one with many possibilities when taken out of its canon context (and truthfully, a bit of a "hmmm..." in context). Cheers to lexywrites for her reluctant edits on this piece.

His black eyes roved over their upturned faces, lingering for a fraction of a second longer on Harry's than anyone else's. It was enough. An unexpected sense of longing coursed through him as his gaze met bright green – the young man's eyes, usually so defiant and proud, were now... reciprocating? Impossible. Their stare, while fleeting, had been intense and fervent – and ignited something in Severus.

Dazed, he quickly snapped his eyes to the next face in the classroom, barely registering the apprehension riddled there, for his focus was wholly consumed by this new development.

Had he asked the question? Was this his answer? His pulse raced, his mind both chastising and reeling in equal measure.

Bloody hell.

It had begun.
